HIV s100 Prescriber Education

Manage the care of people living with HIV and prescribe s100 drugs in a primary care setting by joining ASHM’s HIV s100 Prescriber program: become a HIV s100 prescriber and maintain your accreditation by attending updates.

This program consists of two components:

  1. HIV s100 Prescriber Course is delivered completely online as a four-week course with pre- and post-course activities. Attendance is free for practitioners residing in the targeted state or territory.
    Upon successful completion of this course and the associated assessment, participants can apply for authority to prescribe section 100 drugs for the management of HIV.
  2. HIV s100 Prescriber Updates are 60-minute webinars that keep accredited prescribers informed about the latest clinical HIV research and information.

Course Components

Pre-requisites

Facilitated Online Training

This 4-week facilitated course is comprised of online-self paced activities and weekly interactive case study webinars (live sessions).

Weekly activities take approximately 1-2 hours per week and must be completed prior to attending the case-study webinar. Each week will focus on a specific topic: Initiation of ART, Monitoring ART, Toxicities and Adverse Effects, and Special Scenarios.

Week 1:

  • Video: Supporting patients to begin ART (10 mins)
  • Online Learning Module: The Fundamentals of HIV ART (45 mins)
  • Video: Clinical Principles for ART Initiation (10 mins)
  • Video: Drug Interactions with ART (15 mins)
  • Video: HIV Peer Support (8 mins)
  • Week 1 live session (2 hrs)

Week 2:

  • Online Learning Module: Monitoring HIV ART (40 mins)
  • Video: Monitoring Treatment Adherence (10 mins)
  • Week 2 live session (2 hrs)

Week 3:

  • Video: ART Toxicities (35 mins)
  • Week 3 live session (2 hrs)

Week 4:

  • Video: When Viral Suppression Doesn't Occur (20 mins)
  • Video: Immunodeficiency Syndromes (30 mins)
  • Online Learning Module: Conception and pregnancy (20 mins)
  • Week 4 live session (2 hrs)

Post-Course: to be completed within 4 weeks of attending the training.

  • Post-Course Assessment (up to 3 hours)
  • Post-Course Survey (10 mins)
Learning Outcomes
  • Describe current HIV epidemiology at local, national and global levels.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the science of HIV, the implications for the prevention of disease, and the clinical management of HIV and co-infections.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of antiretroviral therapy and competence in selecting, prescribing, and monitoring antiretroviral therapy in a range of clinical scenarios.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the scientific principles on which diagnostic and treatment decisions in HIV care are based.
  • Demonstrate competence in interpreting clinical and other relevant information to guide effective care of people living with HIV.
  • Demonstrate competence in planning, implementing, and evaluating the clinical care of people living with HIV across all stages of the virus.
  • Outline the importance of demonstrating respect for patients' choice and adhering to legal obligations.

This course is currently pending approval from ACRRM.

This course is currently pending endorsement from ACNP.

ASHM typically delivers one course annually per jurisdiction. Priority is given to participants who have completed the pre-course requisites.

  • HIV s100 Prescribers will be awarded 2 HIV CPD points for attending the full session.
  • ASHM is an RACGP-accredited CPD Provider under the RACGP CPD Program. This activity can be claimed for 1 educational activity hour.
