Every year, ASHM’s Levinia Crooks Emerging Leader Award identifies and uplifts future key opinion leaders making an impact in the sector and demonstrating outstanding leadership while still early in their career.

The award honours the inspirational legacy of Levinia Crooks, AM, former ASHM CEO, in mentoring young leaders and bringing together the global HIV, BBV, and sexual and reproductive health sectors to create change.

This year, the Levinia Crooks Emerging Leader Award in blood-borne viruses (BBVs), sexually transmissible infections (STIs) & Sexual and Reproductive Health has been awarded to Dr Tiffany Phillips and Marcus Shaw. The award recognises their outstanding leadership and impact through their work in research, community outreach, and advocacy.

Dr Tiffany Phillips is a Research Fellow at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Monash University, where her mixed-methods research focuses on expanding access to health care, particularly for priority populations. Dr Phillips has contributed to several national steering committees providing guidance on HIV prevention and elimination, improving the wellbeing of sex workers, and empowering early career researchers.

Marcus Shaw is the Manager of Population Health and Community Development for the WA AIDS Council (WAAC). Marcus has been pivotal to expanding WAAC’s harm minimisation outreach initiatives. Always putting community and collaboration first, Marcus has also spearheaded STI, BBV, and HIV awareness campaigns, including the “Step Forward, Fight Stigma” campaign.

Dr Tiffany Philips and Marcus Shaw will share more about their important contributions to the sector at the Australasian HIV&AIDS Conference on 16 September 2024 at the ICC Sydney on Gadigal Country.
