Antenatal Syphilis Train the Trainer Program – Expression of Interest
Details
Course Overview
We are seeking expressions of interest from antenatal care providers to participate in a ‘train the trainer’ program on antenatal STI testing, with an emphasis on the prevention of congenital syphilis.
A Train the Trainers model is intended to engage master trainers in coaching new trainers who are less experienced with a particular topic by providing set training materials along with guidance on delivering them. Upon completing the program, you will be expected to take on the role of the trainer within your practice setting, using the provided materials and guidance to deliver the training to your colleagues with ongoing support from ASHM.
Session Date & Time:
Date: Two sessions on February 2025 (exact dates TBC)
Time: TBC
The training package consists of:
- An online learning module – participants will learn about syphilis epidemiology, antenatal testing, treatment, and contract tracing at their own pace
- 120-minute live (remote) facilitated and interactive session
- Pre- and post-course evaluation survey
- A toolkit to enable you to deliver the training in your own practice setting
- Ongoing follow-up support by ASHM
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the clinical stages of syphilis and identify clinical symptoms
- Explain the importance of syphilis testing in pregnancy
- Interpret syphilis serology test results
- Discuss referral pathways and supports for positive syphilis cases in pregnancy
- Locate relevant national and state antenatal guidelines for the testing, management, contact tracing and notification of syphilis
Target audience:
The target audience of this Train the Trainers program is healthcare providers who provide antenatal care, including but not limited to midwives and shared-care GPs, and who are working in a role which enables them to provide training and support to colleagues who also provide antenatal care.
Accreditation:
The training package will be submitted for accreditation by key professional bodies such as the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and the Australian College of Midwives. Endorsements may be sought from additional bodies pending advice from the Steering Committee.
The live sessions are tentatively scheduled for February 2025 and will take 120 minutes. The estimated total time commitment for the program is 3 hours plus additional time for trainers to facilitate the training at their home practice.
