Membership Terms and Conditions

By purchasing or subscribing to an ASHM membership, you agree to the following terms and conditions in addition to the conditions relating to membership in the ASHM Constitution (Agreement (ashm.org.au). Please read them carefully before proceeding with your membership purchase. By proceeding with a membership, you confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these terms.

  1. Payment Terms: All membership payments are accepted in good faith and are non-refundable unless there is evidence of an error made by ASHM or by you. Refunds may also be issued in exceptional circumstances, such as evidence of vulnerability or ineligibility for the membership type paid for.
  2. Refund Policy:
    • In cases where a refund is approved and provided, your tax receipt and any tax deductions claimed are no longer valid. You may need to notify the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), who will advise you on the necessary steps.
    • ASHM reserves the right to deduct any bank or transaction charges for any refunds processed.
  3. Membership Benefits:
    • Conference Discounts: Members receive discounted rates on selected ASHM conferences (non-financial members excluded).
    • Scholarships: Members receive priority in selected ASHM scholarship programs (non-financial members excluded).
    • CPD Points: Prescriber CPD points for s100 prescribers, with HBV prescribers receiving 1x HBV CPD and HIV prescribers accruing 2x HIV CPD in the calendar year that ASHM membership was acquired.
    • Job Advertisements: Members can post job advertisements for free within our career bulletin, webpage, and socials, waiving the $110 fee (non-financial members excluded).
    • Voting Rights: Voting members have the right to vote at the Annual General Meeting on ASHM constitutional changes and stand for election as a Board Member (Student, Individual Sustaining, and International from LMIC members excluded).
    • Accommodation Discounts: Members receive a 15% discount off the fully flexible rate to the TFE Hotels Group, including A by Adina, Adina Hotels, Vibe Hotels, Quincy, Travelodge Hotels, Rendezvous, and Collection by TFE Hotels throughout Australia, New Zealand, and Europe (non-financial members excluded).
  4. Definitions:
    • Financial Members: Members who pay a membership fee and have paid their membership year for the period in question.
    • Non-Financial Members: Members do not pay membership fees and who have not paid their membership fee for the period in question, thereby not eligible for certain benefits.
  5. Voting vs. Non-Voting Members:
    • Voting Members: Medical Ordinary, Nursing Ordinary, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Ordinary, Pharmacists Ordinary, Retired and Honorary Life Members.
    • Non-Voting Members: Individual Sustaining, Student, and International from LMIC members.
  6. Membership Duration:
    • Memberships are current for either 12 months from the payment or registration date, if eligible for the membership type selected.
    • Alternatively, memberships are recurring on a 12-month basis if an annual subscription is chosen, if eligible for the membership type selected.
    • Cancelling a recurring 12 month auto-renewing subscription online will cancel the renewal payments but your membership will still be current for the 12 months already paid for. You must contact us if you wish to formally resign from being a member (e.g. you no longer wish to be a voting member) during a current 12-month period.
  7. Eligibility Criteria and Proof Requirements:
    • Medical Ordinary: For medical professionals and other individuals located within Australia and New Zealand with a professional interest in HIV, viral hepatitis, sexual and reproductive health, or related conditions.
    • Nursing Ordinary: For nursing and midwifery professionals located within Australia and New Zealand with a professional interest in the same areas.
    • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Ordinary: For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals located within Australia and New Zealand.
    • Pharmacists Ordinary: For community, retail, and hospital pharmacists located within Australia and New Zealand.
    • Retired: For healthcare professionals who have been an ASHM Ordinary Member for five or more consecutive years and are retired from full-time employment. You will not be asked to verify your employment status, however, may be declined if you have not held an ASHM membership according to these terms.
    • Individual Sustaining: For individuals employed by the pharmaceutical industry, residing outside of Australia and New Zealand, or those who do not wish to influence policy.
    • International from LMIC: For medical professionals from low to middle-income countries (LMIC) with a professional interest in relevant areas. ASHM utilises the World Bank’s modelling to determine eligibility: World Bank Country and Lending Groups – World Bank Data Help Desk. If your address in our system is not from one of the approved countries, your membership may be declined.
    • Student: For full-time students located within Australia and New Zealand, currently undertaking a study relevant to HIV, viral hepatitis, sexual and reproductive health, or related conditions. You will be asked to provide evidence of your student status when you join and each membership year thereafter.
  8. Organisational Sustaining Members (OSMs):
    • Benefits: Include a set number of conference discounts as negotiated at membership year commencement, and waiver of the $110 fee for posting job advertisements on our careers bulletin, webpage, and socials.
    • Terms: Agreement must be reached by the end of the financial year (May-June each year). Invoices are to be paid on 30-day terms, and membership currency is the financial year for which the payment is being made (e.g., payment in June or July for the 1 July- 30 June financial year). For OSMs that are financial, conference discounts will be provided on request to the membership team.
  9. Membership Approval Process:
    • New voting members’ memberships commence on the date payment is made; however, the ASHM Board must still approve them. Under exceptional circumstances covered by our constitution, membership may be declined. ASHM reserves this right. The constitution can be found on our Governance Page here.
  10. Professional Recognition: ASHM membership signifies your commitment to the healthcare profession, particularly in the fields of HIV, BBV (blood borne viruses), and sexual and reproductive health.
  11. Supporting ASHM: Your membership supports ASHM’s mission to enhance workforce capacity, strengthen health systems, and provide resources, training, conferences, and advocacy to eliminate harm, improve wellbeing, and protect diverse communities.
  12. Changes to Terms: ASHM reserves the right to update or modify these terms at any time. Any changes will be communicated to members via email or through our website.
