The ASHM Syphilis Guidance for Primary Care website provides integral professional development for any health practitioners working in primary care including general practitioners, nurses, midwives, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners and/or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers. It does not intend to replace national syphilis guidelines but aims to highlight key information in an accessible format.

After reading the guidance, health practitioners can complete a short assessment to demonstrate their competency and to achieve a certification of completion.

This competency assessment can be used to meet the requirements of the Structured Administration and Supply Arrangements (SASAs) for syphilis treatment in Western Australia for Registered Nurses, Midwives, and Aboriginal Health Practitioners.

  2. Describe the clinical stages of syphilis and identify clinical symptoms.
  3. Interpret syphilis serology test results and administer recommended treatment as per scope of practice.
  4. State the importance of syphilis partner notification and contact tracing.
