Overview

The HIV s100 Prescriber Course is designed to support primary care practitioners to manage and treat HIV.

Learning methods include online learning modules, video presentations, case discussions and facilitated group work, giving attendees an opportunity to discuss practical strategies with peers and specialists.

Upon successful completion of this training and the associated post-course assessment, eligible participants may apply to the relevant state departments of health for authority to prescribe section 100 drugs for the management of HIV in Australia.

Learning Outcomes:

Following the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe current HIV epidemiology at local, national and global levels
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the science of HIV, the implications for the prevention of disease, and the clinical management of HIV and co-infections.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of antiretroviral therapy and competence in selecting, prescribing and monitoring antiretroviral therapy in a range of clinical scenarios.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific principles on which diagnostic and treatment decisions in HIV care are based.
  • Demonstrate competence in interpreting clinical and other relevant information to guide effective care of people living with HIV.
  • Demonstrate competence in planning, implementing and evaluating the clinical care of people living with HIV across all stages of the virus.
  • Outline the importance of demonstrating respect for patient choice and adhering to legal obligations.

Course Components:

This course has 3 components:

1. Pre-requisite activities:

*Please note the online modules must be completed within 12 months before the prescriber course. Practitioners who have already completed them may be given priority for enrolment.

2. Facilitated online training: A four-week program combining self-paced online work with weekly live online case discussion sessions (16 CPD hours; expect to spend 1–2 hours per week on the self-paced activities before each live online session)

Dates and times of the four mandatory interactive case-study webinars are as above.

3. Post course assessment: An online case-based multiple-choice exam to be completed within one month of the facilitated training.

  • This course has been approved by ACRRM as an accredited activity. Allocated total 15 CDP hours. Educational Activity: 41814. 6 Hours. Performance Review: 9 Hours
  • This course has been endorsed by ACNP for 15 CPD hours.

Target Audience:

This course is in high demand and priority will be given to General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners who work in community settings.
