ASHM Chief Executive Officer Alexis Apostolellis has today announced his resignation, stepping down from the role in early 2027 after almost nine years leading the organisation.
ASHM President Prof James McMahon and incoming President Prof Ben Cowie said the Board was grateful for Alexis’ contribution to ASHM and to the sector.
“Alexis has led ASHM with vision, integrity and an unwavering commitment to ASHM, the health workforce and the communities we serve. Under his leadership, ASHM has strengthened its position as the peak body for health professionals working in HIV, viral hepatitis and sexual and reproductive health, expanding its work across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. ASHM is in a fantastic position with a strong internal culture. On behalf of the Board, we thank Alexis and wish him every success in his chapter.”
Reflecting on his time at ASHM, Alexis said:
“It has been a privilege to lead an organisation whose members, staff and partners are so committed to the virtual elimination of HIV and viral hepatitis and to better sexual and reproductive health. I am proud of what we have achieved together, and I am confident ASHM is well placed to continue its important work. I thank the Board, our members, my colleagues at ASHM for their amazing contributions and our sector partners for their support. I am sad to be leaving such a wonderful organisation and sector more broadly, but change is inevitable and change is good to allow for growth and fresh ideas.”
ASHM’s programs, training, conferences, clinical resources and global work will continue as planned during the transition, and the organisation remains committed to its strategic priorities and to the partners, funders and communities it works with.
The Board will commence a national search for ASHM’s next CEO immediately, with an update to Members to follow.
