Course overview

This course has been developed to provide primary health care nurses and midwives with an understanding of the most common sexually transmissible infections (STIs) – chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, hepatitis A and blood borne viruses (BBVs) – hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

Course aims

This course aims to provide primary health care nurses with information on:

  • National epidemiology and strategies and translating this to practice
  • Priority populations for STI and BBV screening and testing
  • STIs – specifically chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and hepatitis A
  • BBVs – specifically HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and
  • Contact Tracing

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the relevance of epidemiology to clinical practice and where to locate local data
  • Describe the clinical presentation of common STIs and BBVs
  • Discuss the importance of discussing sexual health in your clinical practice
  • Identify patients for STI and BBV screening
  • Promote and provide STI and BBV testing within your practice
  • State where to get help if required.
