Overview

This module provides the background and practical information needed on how to take capillary blood samples for dried blood spot (DBS) testing for hepatitis C under guidance by NSW Health. The module is intended for clinicians, health promotion staff, peer workers and others who are completing the sample collection process. DBS testing was approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in March 2026 and is being made available through NSW Health services and partner organisations which provide health and support programs to people at high risk of hepatitis C.  This training program is accessed by password only. Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:  

  • Describe the benefits of DBS sample collection and explain how a DBS test sample is processed 
  • Apply infection control processes when collecting capillary blood samples 
  • Collect a DBS capillary blood sample, explaining to the client the steps and dealing with any issues that might arise during the collection
  • Correctly complete the pathology request that needs to be submitted with the DBS sample.
