Course Overview

People who live with blood-borne viruses (BBV) often experience stigma when interacting with NSW healthcare workers. Stigma can keep people from getting appropriate healthcare and support. It’s often driven by a misunderstanding of the risks that you face in your work.

This module will help you understand the facts about HIV, hepatitis B (hep B) and hepatitis C (hep C). The risks to you are probably lower than you realise, but the cost of stigma to the person in your care is significant. When you understand the facts, you can interact with confidence, deliver better quality care, and reduce the stigma that patients experience.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe how HIV, hep B and hep C are transmitted, prevented and managed, and the health effects that people experience with these conditions
  • Explain why people living with HIV, hep B and hep C face stigma, and the consequences of stigma
  • Describe how to reduce stigma when working with people living with HIV, hep B and hep C.
