This course is designed for nurses and midwives who are looking to learn more about testing and treatment for chronic hepatitis B (CHB), or who already work with people living with CHB. It will equip you with practical skills and knowledge to support patients through evidence-based, culturally safe care.

Course description

This course combines presentations, polling, group discussions and case studies. Topics include lived experience perspectives, epidemiology, culturally safe care, transmission, vaccination and prevention, testing and serology, and initial assessment (including FibroScan). The course also covers monitoring and management of chronic hepatitis B, treatment and linkage to care and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance.  

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:   

  1. Examine hepatitis B epidemiology 
  2. Identify opportunities for screening and testing, vaccination and linkage to care
  3. Explore the role of nurses and midwives in providing culturally responsive care that is free of stigma and discrimination
  4. Describe nurses’ and midwives’ roles in engaging people living with hepatitis B in ongoing monitoring and treatment.

  • Clinical Foundations of Hepatitis B online learning module (recommended, 1 additional CPD hour) 
  • Two 2-hour live online workshops  
  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma online learning module (recommended, 1 additional CPD hour)  
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Liver and Advanced Liver Disease webinar (recommended, 1 additional CPD hour) 
  • Post-course survey

CPD & endorsement

This activity has been endorsed by APNA according to approved quality standards criteria. Completion of this educational activity entitles eligible participants to claim 4 CPD hours.

Attendees may gain up to 3 additional CPD hours by completing the recommended pre- and post-course activities.

All participants who attend the course in full will be awarded a Statement of Attendance.
