Course overview

ASHM, in collaboration with Cancer Council WA, alongside the Liver Foundation and clinical experts, invites you to a focused 1-hour webinar tailored for healthcare professionals in primary care.

This session will explore Hepatocellular cancer epidemiology and key risk factors, including Hepatitis B and C, alcohol use, Metabolically Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), and some non-modifiable risk factors.

It will also provide practical guidance on assessing and reducing risk in general practice, and outline surveillance methods and referral pathways to support early detection and effective patient care.

Diagnosis and treatment of HCC will be addressed in this comprehensive education session designed to highlight the vital role of primary care in reducing incidence and improving the outcomes of liver cancer.

Target Audience

Primary care health professionals, including General Practitioners (GPs), Practice Nurses, and Allied Health Professionals.

Facilitator:

  • Megan Collins is a Clinical Nurse Consultant and Clinical Lead of Patient Support Services at the Liver Foundation, supports individuals living with liver disease through education, advocacy, and care navigation.

Speakers:

  • Professor Leon Adams is a hepatologist in the Department of Hepatology and Liver Transplant Unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He was the section lead for the recent Cancer Council Australia Clinical Practice Guidelines on the surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • Dr Michael Wallace is a Hepatologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Clinical A/Professor at UWA, and Clinical Lead of the Liver Cancer Collaborative. He completed a PhD in hepatocellular carcinoma management and a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Mount Sinai, New York, focusing on HCC and liver fibrosis.

Learning Objectives

Join this webinar tailored for all healthcare professionals, including GPs, nurses, and allied health providers, to:

  • Understand the risk factors for HCC in the primary care population (including age, sex, ethnicity, alcohol use, MAFLD and viral hepatitis
  • Develop knowledge regarding the assessment of risk factors for HCC (i.e. how to assess for cirrhosis)
  • Identify therapeutic options to reduce the risk of HCC (addressing alcohol use, smoking cessation, diabetes management, and viral hepatitis treatment)
  • Understand how to perform surveillance for HCC, including recommended imaging techniques, surveillance frequency, serum markers and appropriate referral pathways
