Course overview

This course explores key aspects of a nurse and midwife’s scope of practice in relation to hepatitis B. Participants will gain practical, in-depth, and person-centred knowledge to support high-quality hepatitis B care, with each session focusing on a distinct topic relevant to nursing and midwifery practice.

This session provides a refresher on the current co-infection guidelines, with case studies on:

Syphilis co-infection: recognising clinical implications, testing recommendations, and strategies for integrated management alongside hepatitis B care.

Hepatitis D (HDV) co-infection: understanding diagnosis, management, and recent updates in care for people living with both HBV and HDV.

The course will provide an overview of the most recent updates to hepatitis B clinical guidelines, including developments in treatment approaches and their implications for patient care. Participants will gain practical insights on how to discuss current and emerging management strategies with their patients, and key considerations for the health workforce in applying the updated guidelines will be explored.

The course includes a presentation from someone living with hepatitis B, discussion of updates on clinical guidelines, as well as a group discussion that focuses on practical quality improvement activities.

Attendees are encouraged to come prepared with existing or potential quality improvement activities related to the session topic they would like to implement in their workplace, as there will be an opportunity to discuss, and problem solve with other healthcare professionals attending the course. If you would like to submit a practice model for discussion, please email Donna-Maria Youssef (donnamaria.youssef@ashm.org.au) by Monday 3 November 2025.
