Prevention for bacterial vaginosis recurrence

A report on Lenka Vodstrcil's presentation "Sexual Behaviours and Past Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) Contribute Significantly to BV Recurrence in Women Randomised to the Oral-Contraceptive Pill"

Such an interesting presentation on Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) which is a common presentation for women with symptoms in sexual health services. I have encountered many women over the years who complain of BV symptoms which often return time and time again despite being treated.

The research presented by Lenka from Melbourne Sexual Health Centre identified that women were 3 times more likely to have a BV recurrence if they had the same ongoing regular male partner and highlighted the importance for further investigation into the sexual transmission of BV and the possibility of partner treatment in the future. The other interesting fact from the research was that the Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COCP) actually promotes healthy vaginal micobiota and may reduce BV recurrence. I’m looking forward to further developments into these areas as possible ways to reduce BV recurrence in our patients.
