Paul Cameron: Introduction to Immunology – What clinicians need to know

What I learned from this session was how little I currently know! I left the session a bit more knowledgeable but the task presented to Professor Cameron would require a short course rather than a 45 minute lecture. I understood things at the start but was soon lost. Not his fault

As immunology takes a greater role in HIV treatment, as it already has in autoimmune diseases, we will all have to become more familiar with its function. However, I take comfort in clinicians managing with a rudimentary understanding of basic science.

Virology and interrupting HIV on a molecular level is so simple to understand in comparison to understanding immunology. This slide below by Professor Cameron outlined where immunotherapy may play a role (with ARV) in treating HIV.  While immunology is the place where a cure for HIV may come, interrupting the function of the immune system to do so may create significant unintended consequences.
